Buyer's Guide To Cycling Helmets

Bontrager Velocis HelmetBicycle helmets have to be mandatory when you ride a bike, no matter if you are 4 or 40!  Too many times our sales people hear excuses for riders not wearing helmets.  But the truth is, for every excuse for not wearing a helmet, they hear a story of how a helmet saved the rider from serious injury.  Riding is full of unpredictable hazards like a squirrel darting in front of you, or a pot hole that comes from nowhere.   Unfortunately, sometimes those hazards cause riders to fall and having a bicycle helmet on can save you from a trip to the hospital.

Modern Bicycle Helmets are Better than Ever

Bontrager Helmets have MiPS Technology

Modern cycling helmets are light, airy and super comfortable. Helmets today are lighter, cooler and safer than helmets from just 5 years ago. Construction technology continues to improve with additional safety provided by the likes of Mips technology.  Mips sets a new standard in helmet safety.  Mips was developed by brain surgeons and scientists to reduce rotational forces on the brain caused by angled impacts to the head.

Features and Fit
Helmet technology for women and men is the same so you always get top safety and features. Every Bontrager helmet is CPSC certified.  Prices range from $40 all the way to $200.  The major reason one helmet is more expensive than another can be attributed to weight and ventilation - the lighter, more ventilated helmet costs more.

Bontrager helmets use the Headmaster fit system for a custom fit.  The Headmaster fit system allows
the rider to easily adjust the fit of his/her helmet with one hand.

Models and Differences

Entry-level Bontrager helmets have have more of a universal fit.  More perfomance models have more specific sizing options to provide a better fit.  This is really important when riders start spending longer times on the saddle.

All helmets have straps and buckles to hold the helmet snug on your head. These are adjusted to hold the helmet square on your head and low over the forehead for protection. There are stiffer and softer straps and different types of adjustments and buckles that you might prefer so it's worth considering these options when searching for a new helmet.

Bontrager mountain bike helmets having a visor to shade your face and deflect things while riding off road. Some visors are removable and/or adjustable.

If you plan on wearing cycling eyewear, be sure to try on the helmet to make sure it's compatible with

your eyewear.  Usually there's no problem, but sometimes the temples or helmet straps might need to be adjusted for clearance.

Bontrager makes helmets aimed at different types of cycling, from road riding, to mountain biking, to commuting, to even dirt jumping and downhilling. A commuting model might include a visor or reflective details, a racing model might have a more aero shape, bolder graphics and be ultra light, and a jumper's helmet would have more head coverage. There's no reason you can't use whatever helmet you like for whatever type of riding you do, so don't feel locked into any one type.

Helmet Fit Tips

  • Snug but not to tight.  Your helmet should rest about a finger's width above your eye brow and be snug on your head.  It shouldn't be able to move around and slide over your eays or over your forehead.  It should be comfortable and you shouldn't feel any unecessary rubbing on your temples or the back of  your head.
  • Hair and fit. Most manufacturers make their women's helmets a little smaller in diameter for women's slightly smaller heads. Don't forget to take into accout the amount of hair you have. Women with long, thick hair need larger helmets. And if you go from long to very short hair, you may find that the helmet is now too small.
  • Hair styles. If you wear a low ponytail, it should sit comfortably below the helmet's retention system. Some women with short to medium hair find pigtails more comfortable. Many women with hair too short for a ponytail find that wearing a do-rag, bandanna or sweatband is a good way to keep their hair back beneath a helmet.
  • Very smalls may need a youth helmet. Despite the typical smaller diameters of women's helmets, some women with very small heads will best fit a youth helmet. Fortunately, the quality, safety and styling on youth helmets is just as nice as on adult models.
